The
northern bluefin tuna lives throughout the Atlantic Ocean as well
as in the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea. An average sized bluefin
will be about seven feet in length and weigh around 1000 pounds. They
can live up to 30 years and reach 14 feet in length. Northern bluefin
are prized by sports fisherman and eaten as sushi.
The southern bluefin tuna is a large bony fish which thrives in the
southern hemisphere. They can be found in all the Earth’s oceans
and grow up to nine feet in length and 900 pounds. Southern bluefins
are opportunistic feeders which eat many sorts of fish, crustaceans
and cephalopods. The southern bluefin is classified as critically
endangered on the IUCN red list of threatened species.
The Pacific bluefin tuna is one of the largest, fastest fish in the
ocean. They reach up to 10 feet in length and can weigh more than
1,200 pounds. In 30-second sprints, Pacific bluefin have been clocked
at more than 30 miles per hour. Tuna are warm-blooded fish and can
live for more than 30 years. Unfortunately, most don’t make
it to that age as they are overfished throughout the world.
